Navigating childhood with ADHD can be a whirlwind for children & their parents.

Childhood presents a unique set of challenges, particularly for children aged 7-12, a phase marked by both hurdles and growth. For children with ADHD or suspected ADHD, these challenges can feel particularly overwhelming.

  • During this stage, children are not only exploring their identities but are also navigating friendships and coping with peer pressure. However, when ADHD symptoms are in the mix, social interactions become more complex due to impulsive behaviors and emotional regulation difficulties. This can often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts with peers.

  • Additionally, managing chores and adhering to household rules can pose additional challenges as children strive for independence and autonomy. These struggles can create tension within families, leaving parents feeling unsure about the best ways to support their children.

It's crucial to approach these challenges with patience, compassion, and understanding. As children with ADHD navigate these obstacles, they require additional support to help them thrive. This is where our expertise comes in. Our personalized approach is tailored to the unique needs of children with ADHD, providing them with the tools and strategies they need to succeed. With our guidance, your child can experience meaningful growth and build a strong foundation for their future.

ADHD in Children: Answers to Your Most Pressing Questions

Got questions? Here are answers for a few of the most common. If your question isn’t answered here, don’t hesitate to get in touch, our admin team at North Texas Adult & Child Counseling Center is happy to connect with you.

  • If your child struggles with paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or is overly active, they may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Common symptoms in kids include:

    • Difficulty focusing or completing tasks: Easily distracted, trouble following instructions, difficulty organizing tasks

    • Hyperactivity: Excessive talking, fidgeting, trouble sitting still

    • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, difficulty waiting their turn

The symptoms must be present in multiple settings (home, school, with friends) to warrant an ADHD diagnosis. The good news is that with proper treatment, like counseling and medication, ADHD symptoms can be managed well.

  • Some signs your child may need extra support for emotional regulation include:

    • Intense emotional reactions that seem out of proportion to the situation. For example, having a complete meltdown over a slight disappointment. -Difficulty calming themselves down once upset. Emotions tend to spiral out of control.

    • Trouble identifying emotions in themselves and others. Your child may have difficulty articulating how they feel or understanding emotional cues.

    • Challenges with flexibility and transitions. Significant changes or schedule switches lead to emotional chaos.

    • Problems with peer relationships. Difficulty making and keeping friends due to emotional outbursts, aggression, or withdrawal.

If any of these are valid for your child, emotional skills counseling can help. A skilled ADHD therapist for kids can teach strategies for better understanding and healthy emotional expression.

  • At North Texas Adult & Child Counseling Center, we offer counseling services tailored to the unique needs of children with ADHD and their families. This includes:

    • Child counseling to build skills like emotional regulation, social skills, and coping strategies.

    • Parent education. We ensure that parents are included in each session (even just for ten minutes) to inform you of our progress and help your child solidify what they learned in session.

Our licensed therapists have specialized training and experience working with ADHD and related behavioral challenges. We take a holistic, compassionate treatment approach focused on the child and family's well-being.
